HCFC-22 (also known as R-22) Freon is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon,
and is a controlled substance managed by the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). This substance is hazardous and can cause significant
damage to the ozone layer and overall environment. Because of the
serious damage that can be caused by Freon regulations have been
passed to restrict usage and distribution. EPA regulations mandate
that only licensed/certified technicians purchase Freon due to its
controlled status. R12/R22, Freon is used in refrigeration and various
air conditioning applications. When Freon levels are low in air
conditioning systems serious problems can arise such as compressor
failure. It is highly critical that all Freon leaks be immediately
repaired by a certified HVAC technician.
Saving Money by eliminating Refrigerant (Freon) Leaks
When an air conditioning system loses 20% of its Freon, electrical
cost can skyrocket to over 40% in additional monthly cost. Many
homeowners falsely believe that having their system topped off every
year is part of regular maintenance. This is far from the truth
as air conditioning systems are designed to completely seal the
Coolant/Freon, therefore when Freon levels drop it is due to malfunction.
Air conditioning systems can additionally suffer serious damage
to the compressor and evaporator
coils due to low Freon levels and leaks.
Air Conditioning Check Up
Many people incorrectly believe that when their A/C system is not
performing as normal that there has to be a Freon leak. This is
not always the case, as A/C systems are very complicated devices
with many moving parts that work in concert to provide cooling.
The only way to properly diagnose any problem or Freon leak in your
A/C system is for a certified HVAC technician to perform a service
check. Air Conditioning service checks should be performed annually
to prevent expensive repairs due to neglect, “click

service check consists of the following.
- Filter Check, clogged filters can restrict air flow and reduce
the efficiency of the system.
- Condenser Inspection
- Thermostat calibration
- Inspect and clean condenser coil
- Check Freon levels and inspect for leaks
- Inspect valve cores and copper line sets
- Inspect electrical connections and sensors
- Inspect control box, circuit boards, relays and wiring
- Check operating pressures and temperatures
- Inspect valve cores and copper line sets
- Inspect electrical connections and sensors
Air Conditioning Freon Leak Detection (Refrigerant loss, Coolant
loss)
Only the most highly experienced HVAC
Technicians possess the knowledge and equipment necessary to locate
and repair Freon leaks. Many unscrupulous technicians will result
to simply re-charging your air conditioning system every few months
which is not only costly but illegal in many instances. This type
of HVAC technician is one that you are wise to avoid as many of
their practices can result in total system replacement. Extreme
Climate HVAC specializes in locating and repairing Freon leaks that
are undetected by even our biggest competitors. We utilize specialized
equipment that can locate even the smallest Freon leaks imaginable.
There are many different methods of detecting Refrigerant/Freon
leaks to include the following methods:
- Electronic sniffer, “this method detects the
leak by capturing emitted fumes”.
- Freon leak pressure test
- UV light Freon leak detection “this method utilizes
AR-GLO fluorescent dyes that are circulated through the air conditioning
system leaving visual traces at the Freon leak locations”.
- Bubble Freon leak detection, “this method utilizes
soapy bubbles to find the leak and can be highly inaccurate”.
If your air conditioning system is leaking Freon, call Extreme
Climate HVAC immediately! We guarantee all of our work and even
offer a $25.00 off coupon towards Freon leak detection and repair,
